Give: Money and the Act of Giving

Give: Money and the Act of giving

Money is good and can also be bad if mismanaged, we have been commanded to give. For things to move smoothly and easily in life, money is needed. Unfortunately, this same money has taken people to their early graves. The Word of God in Timothy 6: 10 (NIV) says, “For the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil. Some people eager for money have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves through many griefs”.

God does not condemn us being rich in fact, His will is that we prosper even as our soul prospereth (3 John 1:2). But when a man begins to serve money and money replaces God in one’s life, then there is a problem.

This is what we see nowadays, people now take money meant for charity, a human being using another fellow human for money rituals, and the list is endless. This is a topic for another day but for this post, attention will be focused on the act of giving among established people and the mentality of some people.

In the last post, I wrote about the necessary things to do if one wants to remain at the top. I will further write on the attitude towards giving to others and how some people perceive them.

The Act of giving

This involves helping people whichever way one can through various means such as money, employment, housing, etc. Giving is a good thing. It brings a lot of reward and fulfillment to one’s life if done properly.

There are many passages in the Bible that encourage us to give and the rewards we receive when we do so. It’s also important to remember that there is a right and wrong way to give. Proverbs 19: 17 says,

“Whoever is kind to the poor lends to the LORD, and he will reward them for what they have done”.

Also, Matthew 7: 6 says, “Do not give dogs what is sacred; do not throw your pearls to pigs. If you do, they may trample them under their feet, and turn and tear you to pieces”.

The two Bible passages show 2 interesting things.

Firstly, when you give to the poor, you are actually lending to God and you can be sure that God’s reward will exceed what you’ve given many times.

Secondly, some people don’t deserve your precious pearls i.e something very special to you which can include money. If you give, they will not only despise you but later turn around and hurt you. I read a report one day, it was about an electrician who worked for a particular woman. She was nice to him and began to trust him to the extent of sending him to help her withdraw money from the ATM.

This man did but also checked her account balance. When he saw she had a few million in her account, he decided to kill her and take the money. He ended up killing her and was caught. There are so many other true-life stories like that. Sometimes it could be a friend taking another friend’s property.

One would want to help but at the end of the day get rewarded with evil. But the Word of God tells us to give to the poor and needy around us, how do we then know the genuine ones? The Answer is WISDOM. Wisdom is profitable to direct (Ecc. 10: 10).

Some people see wealthy people as banks. All they see around them is money. They don’t care about their feelings or how life is treating them. They pretend until they get what they want. Once they do, off they go. Some others believe it’s their right so they demand whatever they want because so and so is their uncle, in-law, relative. People should wake up because whatsoever you sow, you will reap the same.

Some of the well-established people have various experiences with the poor and have therefore closed up their giving channel. They put up a wall around them that seems “arrogant” just to ward off giving their pearls to swine.

There are people who are truly in need but it has become so difficult to locate such people.

The advice will always be wisdom. Let the Spirit of God guide you to give. Anytime you want to give, ask God if it’s okay to give. Don’t give because others are giving or there is pressure on you to give. Give because you want to and it’s the right thing to do as ordained by God. Lastly, give joyfully and expect your reward from God not from any man. Personally I’ve had to withhold giving when I seek God, other times I give freely.
